Liverpool are on the verge of breaking their British transfer record once again, with reports confirming an agreement to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a staggering £125 million. This deal, potentially rising to £130 million with add-ons, marks a major coup for the Reds as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.
A Protracted Transfer Saga Nears Its End
After an initial £110 million bid was rejected in August, Liverpool have finally secured their top summer target. Isak, the 25-year-old Sweden international, is expected to undergo a medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract at Anfield.
This signing would surpass Liverpool’s previous record transfer of £100 million for German midfielder Florian Wirtz, with add-ons pushing that deal to £116 million. Including Isak, Liverpool’s summer spending has already reached approximately £416 million, with other signings such as Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and others.
Isak’s Impact at Newcastle
Isak joined Newcastle in 2022 from Real Sociedad for £60 million and quickly became a key player, scoring 27 goals in 42 appearances last season. He played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph, scoring in the final against Liverpool, and helped the Magpies secure a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League.
However, tensions arose this summer when Isak was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour due to a “minor thigh injury” and reportedly expressed a desire to leave. He trained separately at his former club Sociedad, and publicly stated that promises had been “broken” by Newcastle, indicating a strained relationship.
What This Means for Liverpool
Isak’s arrival is expected to significantly strengthen Liverpool’s attacking options as they aim to challenge for the Premier League title and make a deep run in the Champions League. The club is also reportedly working on signing England defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, signaling continued investment in the squad.
Liverpool have recouped around £190 million from the departures of key players including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, helping to balance their spending.
Looking Ahead
With the transfer window closing soon, Liverpool fans will be eager to see Isak officially join the squad and make an immediate impact. His proven goal-scoring record and versatility could be crucial as the Reds seek to reclaim domestic and European glory.
For Newcastle, the sale marks the end of a significant chapter, but the club has already begun reinforcing their squad with new signings like Nick Woltemade.
