🚨 Investigation Update: Diogo Jota Was Likely Driving and Speeding at Time of Fatal Crash, Say Spanish Police
Spanish authorities have revealed that all current evidence suggests Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was driving the Lamborghini that crashed on a Spanish motorway last Thursday, killing both Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, aged 25.
The 28-year-old Portugal international, who recently married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, was reportedly travelling above the legal speed limit when the fatal accident occurred near Palacios de Sanabria in northwestern Spain.
“All the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota,” stated the Zamora traffic police, confirming the findings from tyre mark analysis and accident reconstruction.
🔍 Key Details of the Crash:
-
The Lamborghini experienced a suspected tyre blowout while reportedly overtaking on the A52 motorway.
-
The car left the road and burst into flames, making the recovery and investigation more difficult due to the intensity of the fire.
-
Investigators found visible tyre marks for over 100 meters (330 feet) before the crash site.
-
While some claimed the road had uneven asphalt, police said it was not classified as an accident black spot and was safe to drive even over 120km/h (75mph).
🕊️ A Nation in Mourning
The tragedy struck just 11 days after Jota’s wedding, leaving behind three children and a grieving football community.
The two brothers were en route to the Spanish port of Santander, from where Jota planned to return to Liverpool for pre-season training.
A joint funeral was held in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, where fans, teammates, and family gathered to pay tribute.
