Sacked Referee David Coote Charged by FA Over Leaked Klopp Video

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been formally charged by the Football Association (FA) after a leaked video showed him making offensive comments about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and referencing his nationality.

The FA announced the charge under Rule E3.1, which relates to improper conduct, including abusive or insulting language. Coote’s remarks are now considered an aggravated breach because of the nationality-based reference.

🛑 Coote's Collapse: From Euro 2024 to FA Charges

Coote, 42, was suspended in November 2024 after the video surfaced on social media, leading to a swift investigation by PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), which eventually led to his dismissal.

The FA's charge highlights that the misconduct occurred while Coote was still involved in football, giving the governing body jurisdiction.

🎲 Gambling Allegations? Dismissed.

Alongside the Klopp controversy, Coote had faced separate allegations about discussing a yellow card before a match, which triggered gambling misconduct rumors.

However, the FA has since cleared him of any betting-related wrongdoing. Coote called the accusation "false and defamatory."

🚫 UEFA Ban and Euro 2024 Incident

Earlier this year, Coote was banned from officiating in UEFA competitions until June 2026, after a separate controversy — a video showing him sniffing a white powder while on duty at Euro 2024.

💬 Coote's Personal Reveal: “I Hid My Identity”

In January, Coote came out as gay, revealing he had kept his sexuality hidden for most of his career due to fear of backlash. He also admitted to struggling with a drug habit, which he claims to have overcome through therapy.

⚖️ What Happens Next?

Although Coote is no longer active in football, the FA retains jurisdiction because he was still involved in the game when the video became public.

Here’s how the disciplinary process works:

  • If Coote admits the charge, an independent regulatory commission will issue a sanction.

  • If he denies the charge, the commission will review evidence, decide the outcome, and issue punishment accordingly.

Potential Consequences:

  • A fine (with a 25% penalty if not paid on time)

  • A possible suspension from all football-related activities if the fine remains unpaid 35 days after the deadline
